The Cost of Inactivity and Pain in Canada
Physical inactivity is a major health crisis affecting millions of Canadians. According to ParticipACTION, adults in Canada spend an average of 9.3 hours per day being sedentary. This lack of movement contributes significantly to musculoskeletal issues like back pain and stiff joints.
Furthermore, the World Health Organization reports that 31% of adults worldwide do not meet recommended physical activity levels. This inactivity increases the risk of chronic disease and exacerbates pain conditions. In Canada alone, the cost of physical inactivity to the health-care system is estimated at $3.9 billion annually. You don't have to be a statistic. Therapeutic yoga provides a safe, accessible way to start moving again.
Therapeutic yoga is a distinct practice that adapts traditional yoga techniques to address specific physical and mental health conditions. While a regular yoga class focuses on flow and fitness, therapeutic yoga focuses on healing. It uses a combination of gentle postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), and meditation to specifically target areas of pain or dysfunction.
At West End Rehab & Physical Therapy, our approach is clinical yet holistic. We don't just ask you to touch your toes; we look at why you can't touch them. Is it a tight hamstring, a lower back issue, or a nervous system response to pain? By modifying poses with props like chairs, straps, and blocks, we make yoga accessible to everyone—regardless of age, flexibility level, or injury status. It is about function, not form, helping your body relearn how to move pain-free.

Office Workers: Professionals experiencing "tech neck" or stiffness from prolonged sitting.
